2017 BMW i3 EV Gets 50 Percent More Driving Range

The growing electric vehicle market presents an arms race of sorts for today’s automakers, where the weapon is ever-improving battery technology and the war is to clamp down on the inherent EV range anxiety. 
 
The latest to add more battery-powered driving range is the 2017 BMW i3, which will offer a new 94 amp hour battery pack beginning in summer 2016 that increases range by 50 percent from 81 miles (130 km) in “real world” conditions to 124 miles (200 km).

The improved battery pack is said to be the result of a higher density lithium ion cell configuration, developed by BMW and Samsung, which crucially takes up no more space than the first-generation battery.

According to BMW, both battery packs (the original 60 Ah unit and new 94 Ah pack) will be offered for the foreseeable future, and the new pack will also be available on the 2017 BMW i3 range extender models, which feature a 650cc two-cylinder engine gas engine that adds an additional 93 miles (150 km) of range.

Curb weight does increase by about 88 pounds between the lighter 60 Ah pack and new 94 Ah pack, however driving performance should remain the same. Both 2017 BMW i3 EVs race to 60 mph in around 7.3 seconds and to a top speed of around 93 mph.

 Charging speed does improve with the larger battery pack though; the 94 Ah battery can utilize three-phase charging currents to top off capacity in under three hours and “fast charge” up to 80 percent full in only 40 minutes. Plugged into a typical wall outlet, the new i3 will charge in around ten hours.

Miffed that your BMW i3 came with a first-generation battery pack? Thanks to their identical exterior dimensions, BMW is offering a program to retrofit older i3 EVs with the new battery type. The firm is also offering a more powerful i Wallbox charging station for homes as well.

Rolling updates like these will allow today’s EVs to compete against the newest and ever-evolving range of electric vehicles coming to market—especially standouts like the new Tesla Model 3 and Chevrolet’s highly anticipated 200-mile-plus range Bolt EV hatchback.

2016 Camaro SS vs Grand Cherokee SRT: Can Jeep Hang Tough?

Put a Camaro SS up against a Ford Mustang GT, or a Dodge Challenger SRT, and those would both be pretty amicable races. Similar horsepower, weight, and performance out of the box. But put the Camaro SS up against a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT, and that’s when things get weird.

The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS, what with its 455 horsepower and 4.0 second 0-60 time, should hypothetically send the Grand Cherokee back to the drawing board in terms of power to weight. But don’t underestimate the might of the all-wheel drive, 470-horsepower Jeep.



Sure, the Jeep quickly gets walked away from towards the end of the strip. But from a dig, that SRT worked quickly and kept up with the Camaro a good while before weight and aerodynamics became a factor.

Both cars were stock, in case you were wondering. Maybe a Hellcat motor is exactly what that Jeep needs to make things more interesting in the future.

The Ferrari LaFerrari is a $1.4 million, 959-horsepower piece of engineering genius. It’s a worthy successor to the Enzo, and one of the most talked about cars of the past few years. But when it’s gone, something will need to step in its place. The Ferrari F80 Raeli concept could be that successor.

The concept was created by Italian designer Adriano Raeli. Like the Enzo and LaFerrari it would hypothetically follow, the F80 takes a page right out of the Pininfarina design book—albeit with a few new modern tweaks.

 The sharp nose and long, aggressive rear remind us of Ferrari supercars past, but the aggressive intake systems and aerodynamics make it an entirely new, unique vehicle from top to bottom.

But it wouldn’t just be pretty, it’d be powerful too. Under the hood, Adriano expects Ferrari to drop the displacement some from the V12 currently found in the LaFerrari, to a twin-turbo hybrid V8 using Ferrari’s KERS technology. But less displacement doesn’t mean less power.

A hypothetical 1,200 horsepower would come from this Prancing Pony, giving it a 0-62 mph time of only 2.2 seconds, and a jaw-dropping top speed of 310 mph.

Of course, the whole project is a big “what if?”—albeit a very pretty one. If/when Ferrari does decide to replace the LaFerrari, we suggest they call up Adriano for some ideas.

Mercedes Made Audi Into What It Is Today

A story that doesn’t get told enough is how Mercedes directly gave Audi the tools to become a heated rival. In the process, the door might have been held open for BMW, too.
 
In the first decades after World War II, Audi was lying dormant in the Auto Union family with Horch and Wanderer. DKW was the only active brand of the four rings. While its three-cylinder, two-stroke products were powerful, they were rudimentary.

 So DKW remained in the lower market segments, and Auto Union’s outlook was bleak. Sales were slow, which was worrisome to company’s then-parent company Daimler-Benz.

During this same time, Mercedes had been flirting with the idea of re-entering some of the more mass-produced market segments it had served before the war. There were a few prototypes created, including the W118 (later W119) sedan/coupe seen here in the early 1960s.

Today we can understand the potential appeal in a premium small car like this. The W118’s large Mercedes tri-star emblem was a feature shared with the flashy SL cars, and this one had the wide grille to match the recently introduced Pagoda. Even Mercedes officially acknowledged the similarities,

 “With their SL face, low beltline, roof attachment clearance and rear design, the test vehicles produced were close to the Mercedes-Benz 230 SL (W113) in terms of style.”

So when it was clear DKW needed help, Mercedes saw its baby Benz as the way forward. They sent its head of Advanced Passenger Car Development, Ludwig Kraus, down to Auto Union in Ingolstadt. He was armed with the design for the W118/W119 and a new high-compression 1.7-liter four-stroke engine codenamed M118.

The first fruit of this action could be seen in the 1963 DKW F102 model. The squared-off unibody car was a radical departure from the company’s previous rounded models.

 The uncluttered three-box design with thin pillars and a large greenhouse had more than a passing resemblance to Mercedes-Benz’s W118. But this car still had the old fashioned two-stroke motor.

The German public turned up its nose to the smoky old technology. Slow sales of the F102 was the last stand for Mercedes. The company explained, “Auto Union was focused on the lower market segment; for Daimler-Benz AG to enjoy success in the lower mid-range would have meant too great a financial investment.”

Mercedes wanted cash to build a new truck plant, and so they sold Auto Union to Volkswagen in 1964. During this acquisition two key elements remained in Ingolstadt—Kraus and the plans for the M118 motor.

Auto Union would update the F102 to the F103 in 1965, and two pivotal events happened. The new car utilized a new four-cylinder, four-stroke motor. It was also decided that the DKW name was too tarnished in the public’s mind, and so the first post-WWII car with an Audi badge was born.

The high-compression (11.5:1) motor based on the Mercedes M118 design was the exact opposite of the antiquated two-stroke that it replaced. In fact, the power was so good, the engineering was utilized to expand the range of Audi vehicles into larger and more upscale market segments.

The water-cooled motor was also vastly different from the technology used by Volkswagen at the time. That gave Kraus, now Chief Engineer at Auto Union, the confidence to insist that his engineering department be separate from its VW parent.

 This is a key factor that allowed Audi to grow its new reputation so rapidly.

It would take many more strategic engineering steps for the quad-ringed brand to climb from one of the lowest segments in the market to the top rung. Still, it’s hard to deny that a giveaway by Mercedes decades ago sowed the seeds for one of its chief rivals today.

It should also be noted that this development timeline is close to BMW’s New Class premium compact cars that are credited with saving the company.

This makes for an interesting speculation of what the market would look like if Daimler-Benz had continued the development of the W118/119 as its own? Had this compact car been sold under the tri-star badge, would Audi be as distant a memory as Horch? Would BMW not have had a wide-open segment for its corporate recovery?

Today, Mercedes-Benz’s overall success requires little pity for missed opportunities. But it is interesting how one moderately priced car changed the whole premium marque landscape.

Compare that to the Z06, and that’s just over $13,000 worth of savings. Considering the Grand Sport has all the suspension, braking, body, and tire upgrades the standard Z06 has, it’s hard to pass up this Corvette. Especially when it looks this good.

Unlike the Z06, though, the engine from the standard Stingray remains—not to say that it’s some underpowered slouch. The 6.2-liter V8 produces 460 horsepower, and should propel you to 60 mph in about 4.0 seconds flat in Grand Sport trim (weight reduction and all).
 
The Grand Sport Corvette also comes with a huge selection of colors and options for the interior, making this ‘sparse’ sports car less so. For the price, the performance, and the looks, this is the Corvette I’d choose.

A Legendary Peugeot Le Mans Race Car is for Sale

Back in 2008, Audi stormed to yet another 24 Hours of Le Mans win, accumulating its eighth win in just nine years, and since then the German outfit has claimed five more. Fittingly, the film Truth in 24 was even produced to document the team and its historic reign of terror at Le Mans. 

This however isn’t that storied 2008 car—the Audi R10 TDI—it’s not even an Audi. This is the car that came in second place, behind by four minutes—a Peugeot 908 HDi FAP Le Mans prototype, chassis number five. And in the exclusive world of racing where many historic cars are squirreled away for the rest of eternity, this one won’t be.

It will surface on May 14th in the principality of Monaco and go up for auction with RM Sotheby’s, expected to fetch between $1.4 and $1.8 million for its history and provenance, of which there’s much.

First teased in concept form in 2006, the 908 cars proved to be winners off the bat, taking a debut win in 2007 at Monza and wrapping up the European Le Mans Series championship later that year. At their core was an innovative 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged diesel V12 which chucked out over 700 horsepower and a massive 850 plus lb.-ft. of torque. An exhaust particulate filter made these cars much cleaner to race, a rather noteworthy item amongst today’s diesel headlines.
Chassis number five (one of two built for 2008) was constructed by Team Peugeot Total in late 2007 and also proved to be quick straight out of the gates. With Nicolas Minassian, Marc Gene, and Jacques Villeneuve (1997 F1 champion) at the wheel, this Peugeot 908 prototype finished second at Le Mans and earned another second place finish later that year at the Nürburgring 1000km.

Greater success followed in 2009 when chassis number five won the Petit Le Mans and Algarve 1000km, followed by another second place finish at the Silverstone 1000km in 2010. All told this car took three 2nd place finishes, three pole positions, and four fastest laps in addition to its pair of wins.
Following the 2010 season, chassis number five was retired as Team Peugeot Total moved to a newer 908 prototype design, featuring a smaller diesel V8. It has once before been offered up at auction, but come May it’ll find new ownership once again. Imagine turning up to a track day in this beast.
