Jaguar’s new F-Type convertible and coupe have been two of the biggest cars to come of the British automaker’s lineup in recent history. Both feature V6 and V8 options, and boast sport enough power in the top end to put lesser sportscars on notice. But could Jag go smaller?
According to a new report form AutoExpress, Jag officials are considering placing a four-cylinder engine in the F-Type. “As long as we can deliver the character and performance we expect of the car, we would be open to a four cylinder,” said Program Director Russ Varney in a recent interview.
Varney suggested that the four-cylinder F-Type could come with somewhere in the market of 350 horsepower with the benefit of turbocharging. It would likely be the same I4 turbo engine we’re expecting to see in the new XE sedan later this year at the Paris Motor Show.
Continuing on, Varney said that “As long as we can deliver an honesty and legitimacy about the performance of the F-Type, then we can use whatever powertrain we like.”
No official confirmation has been given by Jag as of yet, but a four-cylinder F-Type does sound enticing. Sort of like the more powerful, better-looking FR-S we were hoping for. Except from Britain.
