Automakers have become pretty laissez-faire with vehicle class names and their definitions. BMW has its four door coupes and SUVs that are not coupes at all. Not one to be left out, Mercedes-Benz just unveiled a segment-busting vehicle called the “Concept Coupe SUV,” and it is targeted right at the utterly useless BMW X6.
Among the many new debuts at the Beijing Motor Show was this concept vehicle. Mercedes-Benz is describing the concept as “sensual as a coupe– visionary as an SUV.” Whatever that means. The concept features a low (for an SUV) roofline, raised belt line, and is set off with massive 22-inch wheels.
The future X6 competitor was painted in Alu Beam, which is a nod to the Mercedes-Benz “Silver Arrows.” They were panted in the same hue when they raced in the 1930s and 1950s.
The Concept Coupe SUV comes powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 making 325 horsepower and 354 pound feet of torque. Power is sent to MB’s 4MATIC all-wheel drive. The concept also rides on an air suspension with the Active Curve System that is found on the current S-Class Coupe
Despite the ‘concept’ in the name, this is likely an accurate portrayal of a future production model. We should expect that production model later this year or some time next year. By then it will have some nonsensical naming convention, like GLC.
