If you didn’t know, the French build some awfully pretty cars. Most of these cars are of the “hot hatchback” variety. But if you don’t know French automakers Peugeot and Citroen, you may be in for a pleasantly rude awakening.
According to Edmunds, PSA Peugeot-Citroen CEO Carlos Tavares said that, as part of the automaker’s restructuring plans, the brands could extend U.S. buyers, including the upscale DS line. Tavares stated that by 2016, the PSA brand should be able to “operate anywhere in the world,” although he did not give a confirmation to U.S. buyers.
You may remember that back in 2012, GM purchased a seven percent stake in PSA, leading to joint European development of a new vehicle. Whether this partnership will extend into a joint project for the U.S. is still unclear.
If a return to the U.S. is the case, Peugeot would have to find a way to overcome its $6.2 billion loss it suffered in 2012, on top of a costly expansion.
But, if Peugeot does find its way stateside, it would be the first time that the French brand would been available to U.S. buyers since it was originally introduced in the states in 1958.
