Convertibles are really a tricky thing to perfect. Jag did it right with the new F-Type, Mazda has been doing it right for decades, but lately, BMW hasn’t been able to find that “wow” factor when it comes to eye-catching convertibles. Oh wait, they just did — it’s the new BMW M4 Convertible, and it’s the prettiest damn convertible we’ve seen in a long time.

With spring on the way, BMW thought it only right to drop the top on the M4 ahead of this month’s New York Auto Show. In order to soak up all that sunshine, the hard top roof raises and lowers in just about 20 seconds, at speeds of 11 mph (18 km/h).

Taking its identity from the equally pretty coupe, the M4 convertible features aggressive cues on the front end, a beautiful backside, and a roof that fits almost seamlessly to the rest of the body. It’s definitely a step up from the M3 coupe convertible, which has already been forgotten.

But where the M4 Convertible leaves its standard 4 Series sibling in the dust, is the use of a more powerful, 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 good for 425 horsepower. With a seven-speed M Double Clutch transmission, the cabrio will reach 60 mph in 4.2 seconds. With the standard six-speed manual, it will get there in 4.4 seconds. It will continue from there on to a top speed limited to 155 mph.

Other features include an Active M Differential, M compound brakes and an Adaptive M suspension. The three suspension modes include Comfort, Sport, and Sport+, if you want to get a little sideways. And inside, the M4 is coated in supple red leather seats and M badges aplenty.

All this pretty styling and speed will go on sale this summer after its debut in the Big Apple. Price though, we likely won’t know until later this month.
