That’s right, “stunning.” Only a handful of Volvo vehicles can fall into that category, and the two concepts you see before you do. Meet the not-so-originally named Volvo 40.1 crossover concept, and the Volvo 40.2 hatch-sedan; both will be coming to the Volvo lineup in the next few years.

A departure from the sensible and elegant Volvo design language we’re typically used to seeing, the 40.1 and 40.2 preview a duo of vehicles aimed directly at the younger buyer—remember the whole Snapchat teaser thing? Volvo hopes to attack the market not only with a striking design, but an all-new platform.

Volvo Concept 40.2 profile

“Each member of our product family has its own distinct character, just like the members of a real family,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President of Design at Volvo. “CMA has helped us to capture something special, something youthful in our new concept cars. They have an energy, a disruptive and engaging urban character that makes them stand out amongst the crowd. This is the flavor of small Volvos to come.”

The new ‘CMA’ architecture will underpin both the 40.1 and 40.2 when it goes into production next year. It works well with either gas or diesel engine options, and can even house the inevitable hybrid-battery and pure electric setup, which the latter, Volvo says, will get up to 215 miles of range on a single charge.

The two cars will be the focal points for Volvo’s revamped 40 series, and should be on sale sometime in the next year. Let’s just hope that stunning design carries over from concept to production (though, I wouldn’t hold my breath).
