The BMW M235i is a wonderful car. It’s a handsome car. It’s a fast car. And I’m not just saying that because I own one (ok, maybe just a bit). But as wonderful a thing as it is, sometimes I find myself longing for two extra doors. Thankfully, my nonsensical muttering in the IKEA parking lot must have been overheard by someone at BMW, because a four-door 2 Series and M2 are coming.

Not only did the intrepid folks at Autocar get the scoop that a GranCoupe variant of the 2 Series is in the works for 2019, but that the M2 will get the GranCoupe treatment as well.

This is big news for fans of BMW, considering there’s now direct competition to the Audi RS 3 and CLA 45 AMG. Unlike the Audi and the Benz, though, this 2 Series GranCoupe will ride on a rear-wheel drive platform, not a front-wheel drive platform as was previously rumored.

The four-door 2 Series will be stiffer, say BMW insiders, and the possibility for a more practical “liftback” is still on the table, citing more usability than some of its competitors. There’s no doubt both the four- and five-door variants would definitely add some practicality to the already awesome 2 Series.

If you’re in the U.K., you’ll likely be getting your 2 Series GranCoupe variant in 2019, while those of us in the United States will have to wait until 2020. Although we know when the car will arrive, what we don’t know for sure is what it will look like. Let the renderings begin.
