We were all promised flying cars one day and Terrafugia aims to make good on that promise. The TF-X is designed to be a flying car that anyone can operate as easily and safely as any old car. It’s not a DeLorean and it won’t travel through time, but it could be the next best thing.

The TF-X will carry four people with a flight range of 500 miles and will fold up after your journey so that it will still fit in a standard single-car garage. It won’t even need a runway. A 100-foot diameter clearing will be enough for its vertical takeoff and approved landing sites will be determined before the car leaves the ground.

It’s a great idea, but there’s a long way to go from the drawing board to the sky. According to Top Gear, the latest step in making the TF-X a reality is recent FAA approval to fly unmanned 1/10th scale drone versions of the TF-X. This will let the company do more testing, which means it’s that much sooner to becoming real.

How soon? Well, don’t hold your breath. The company expects development to last 8-12 years although you can reserve one today and guarantee your chance to buy before the rest of the public.
