The return of the heralded BMW M1 is another one of those stories that we’ve been following for some time now. But since reports first emerged way back when in 2008, we haven’t seen much of tangible evidence from BMW. But that could change.

According to M division chief Friedrich Nitschke, in a recent interview with Caradvice.com.au, an M1 might be the next step. After finalizing production and distribution of the i3 and i8, Nitschke explains that “[it’s] a question of capacity not a question of know-how,” in regards to the M1.

While Nitschke himself is expressing much interest in the rebirth of the M1, the idea still needs to go through the approval of the board before any sort of production could begin.

Of course, we’ve been hearing rumors of a new M1 since the Homage Concept (pictured here) was introduced in 2008. And engine details range from somewhere in the neighborhood of between 600 and 700 horsepower from a hybrid powertrain.

Either way, we’ll look for more reports as time goes on.
