So you say you want an insanely styled car that has Italian flair, American muscle, and potentially a kilo of “Peruvian marching powder” hidden somewhere in the body panels? Man, do we have the car for you– a 1972 DeTomaso Pantera, set up for Group 4 racing!
Group 4 was a wild series in international sports car racing in the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s. It consisted of track events and rally’s and featured some of the best cars of the day. Group 4 required a homologation of 50 (later changed to 25) cars. That is to say, 50 road-going examples of a car had to be sold. The Ford GT40 was an example of a car that needed to be homologated to race with its larger engine.
Another such vehicle was this Detomaso Pantera. The Pantera was the followup to the decidedly strange and amazing Detomaso Mangusta, and both featured dramatic styling and 351 cubic inch V8 from the Ford Mustang Boss 351.
The engines were prepared by specialist Bud Moore. The Group 4-spec Pantera– like the one being sold at the duPont Registry– featured revised body work to accommodate the wider track, while the engine featured racing camshafts and valve springs.
It’s not too often that you can truly own a racecar for the road, and this car is a prime example. $125,000 might seem steep for a ’72 Pantera, but with the race-prepped Group 4 setup, it would be worth having over many other new cars of the same price.
