There are some cars that require some explanation to understand the fascination. Sometimes that is because the cars are boring and you need to understand why we care. Other times, they are so strange and fascinating that more background is needed. The 1965 Lamborghini 350GT is among the latter.
If you spend a lot of time around cars, you’ve probably heard the story of how Ferruccio Lamborghini originally made tractors, and became quite wealthy doing it. He was able to acquire a collection of cars, including a Ferrari 250 for personal enjoyment. When he brought the Ferrari back asked to have a better clutch installed, Enzo famously told him he was just a tractor maker and couldn’t possibly know anything about sports cars.
In 1963, Ferruccio and his eponymous company displayed the first prototype, and a year later, the 350 GTV came to market. Produced with Carrozzeria Touring, they had created 20 models by the end of 1966.
Most of the vehicles in the initial run was equipped with the wonderful 3.5-liter V12, built by Bizzarrini and making 320 horsepower. His first engine was essentially a race motor that made 400 horsepower, and had to be detuned to make it suitable for customers.
After that initial production run, 23 more versions of the 350 GT were built using a 4.0-liter V12 making 320 horsepower, but more torque. And perhaps what is not known to many is that Carrozzeria Touring built two spyder models.
