A World Where Driving is Illegal Could Be Closer Than You Think

Imagine a world of autonomous cars. It’s a world full of people working on the way to work and relaxing on the way to a relaxing vacation. It would be very efficient, but not everyone likes the idea of autonomous cars. We have a choice right now, but what if we didn’t have that choice and driving your own car was illegal?

You might say it will never happen, but there’s a chance that it will, and soon. Right now, autonomous technology is already taking control of our cars. Adaptive cruise control, automatic braking, and lane keeping assist are all bits of autonomous tech in cars today. Those features take control when you don’t want to be bothered or when the car determines you’re driving wrong.

They’re safety features designed to help prevent driver errors that could cause accidents, which is why they might someday replace drivers altogether, whether we like it or not. Humans make mistakes. Accidents often happen because humans are, well, human. We screw up and the consequences can be deadly when we’re behind the wheel.

Autonomous cars hold the promise of not screwing up. They can’t get sleepy, or drink too much, or misjudge road conditions. This would make them safer, saving who knows how many lives. Governments mandate the daylights out of our cars to make them safe, so why wouldn’t they one day mandate us right out of the driver’s seat? Enjoy your time behind the wheel. You might not have as much of it as you think.
