When you think of Triumph, you might think of plucky British roadsters or iconic motorcycles. A vehicle called the Mayflower is not the first one we might think of. Frankly, I’ve never seen one in the wild– let alone two for sale in my own back yard!
Built from 1949 until 1953, the Triumph Mayflower was marketed as an “upscale small car.” In post-war England, a vehicle of this size, but with an upscale feel, fit the sensibilities of a recovering nation. It sold well, moving 35,000 units over the course of its lifetime.
About a week ago, I came across a pair of Mayflower sedans while driving north of Boston. One was nearly covered in rust, while the other retained much of the original paint. Both had decent interiors. I took some photos, and went about my business.
A week later, one of our readers emailed us this Craigslist posting of the exact same cars! Interestingly enough, the price has come down since I first set eyes upon the duo.
These cars were previously being sold for $4,500, but are now listed on CL for a very attainable $3,000.
The Mayflower received both praise and criticism when it arrived for its “razor edge styling.” Jeremy Clarkson called it the ugliest car of call time, but Jezza might be wrong on this one.
It has the look of a smaller Rolls Royce, and was the inspiration for the 1955 John Brack oil painting, ‘The Car.” If you are into post-war British sedan, it could be The Car (or cars) for you.
