When we first saw the McLaren 650S pop up on the web, we were a little puzzled. The MP4-12C didn’t seem like it needed a replacement, and this seemed much more than a mid-cycle refresh. After learning more and seeing it in person, we now understand that this constant evolution will be the hallmark of McLaren moving forward.

At an off-site event blocks from the New York International Auto Show, McLaren revealed the 650S to select journalists, and my gawd– It’s glorious. The new front end is inspired by the P1 hybrid hypercar, and adds 24 percent more downforce. Engine cooling has also been improved by the new body. The new LED lights pack a visual punch, but are also more efficient than the previous lights.

The twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 has been updated, with new pistons, cylinder heads, revised cam timing, and exhaust valves. The result is 641 horsepower and 500 pound feet of torque.

It can get from zero to sixty in just 2.9 seconds and zero to 100 mph in an amazing 5.7 seconds. There is also no gas guzzler tax, as the 650S returns 16 mpg city, 22 mpg highway.

McLaren has been racing for decades, but the company, in its current form really only started three years ago. The F1 was more of a one-off, and the 12C was a higher volume car, with 1200 sold in North America. That’s high-volume for the supercar world. And when those are your sales numbers, you don’t wait to change things– you evolve constantly. The 650S is that evolution from a brand that has in less than five years, asserted its cars among the shortlist of must-have supercars.
