Discovery Sport: Baby Disco has a Name and a Price

Out with the old and in with the new. Land Rover verified this week at the New York Auto Show that the upcoming replacement for the aging Freelander will be known as the Discovery Sport. The company has yet to provide official specs or renderings of the car – we just have these spy shots to go by – but a production-ready debut is slated for the 2014 Paris Motor Show in October.

The 2015 Discovery Sport will be offered in a five-seat and a stretched seven-seat configuration, which will feature all-new interior furnishings, exterior elements, and engine options. However, the chassis and underpinnings of the current Freelander will be ported over.

This marks the first of a planned three-car expansion under the Discovery nameplate. Land Rover is expected to reveal the current full-size Discovery’s replacement later this year. In speaking with AutoExpress, the company’s sales and marketing director, Phil Popham, was oddly candid about the third iteration in the Discovery brand.
“I honestly don’t know what direction we’ll take, but it’s not a dissimilar situation to what we were in with Range Rover, where we created a couple and then a family.”

The company added the Evoque model to its Range Rover and Range Rover Sport family back in 2011. The Evoque currently retails in the US for $41,100, so we expect the Discovery Sport to fill the gap immediately below.

Land Rover hasn’t confirmed these claims, but the Disco Sport looks to receive the new Jaguar Hot Fire 2.0L turbocharged gas and diesel mills.
