The custom Captain America bike that Peter Fonda rode in the 1969 movie ‘Easy Rider’ is an instantly recognizable symbol of the era. According to the AP, the iconic stars-and-stripes covered Harley-Davidson is set to go to auction and could sell for upwards of $1 million.

There were originally four bikes used in filming, but three were stolen right from the set, never to be seen again. This last one was used in the scene at the end of the movie and almost met a fiery death, but has been restored to its former glory.

That restoration came from none other than Dan Haggerty, better known as Grizzly Adams, who was in charge of the bikes during filming.
After he rebuilt it, he sold it to the National Motorcycle Museum in Iowa. The 1952 Harley-Davidson Hydra-Glide police model changed hands again when it was sold to California businessman Michael Eisenberg.

Eisenberg has long been an ‘Easy Rider’ fan and even ran the Thunder Road House in West Hollywood with Fonda and ‘Easy Rider’ co-star Dennis Hopper in the 1990s, until the place burned down due to electrical problems.

It’s the fulfillment of a long time dream to finally own the bike, but now that it’s his, he wants everyone to be able to see this little piece of history.

The bike will be auctioned off by Profiles in History out of Calabasas, California, on Oct. 18 with Eisenberg planning to donate some of the proceeds to the American Humane Association in a nod to Fonda’s support of the group.
