For the longest time, American cars had only been known for outright speed. They were point-and-shoot weapons that decimated the dragstrip. However, over the past few years, American cars have been improved ten-fold in the realm of cornering and offering the driver a more engaged experience. Cars like the Z/28 Camaro, or the Mustang GT350 are becoming the new normal for American performance cars.
With that though, the question has become, has America lost its love for absolute speed? Of course not! This is America people, we will always be lovers of ridiculous amounts of horsepower and straight line velocity. We have tuner shops like Hennessey and AMS Performance that make insane creations every day.
Nevertheless, there are plenty of big American manufacturers that are building unbelievably fast cars. To celebrate that quest for outright power, here are five of the fastest American cars you can buy.
650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. That’s how much power the new Corvette Z06 makes. Its supercharged LT4 engine is absolutely bonkers, and thanks to all that power, the new Corvette Z06 will hit 60 miles per hour in just 2.9 seconds. It will then go on to blitz the quarter mile in just 10.95 seconds at 127 miles per hour. This makes it the fastest Corvette ever built and definitely one of the fastest American cars ever built.
Hellcat Charger/Challenger
How can we not have a list of American towers of power without the most ridiculous family cars to come out in the history of family cars. The Hellcat Charger and Challenger are 707 horsepower middle fingers to the Toyota Prius and environmentalists everywhere. They make noise, smoke, and grown men giggle like schoolchildren. Both cars are the most muscly, muscle cars ever.
Ford GT
The new Ford GT just debuted at the Detroit Auto Show this January. It featured an all carbon body, carbon suspension pieces, and a 700+ horsepower twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 engine that was lifted from the company’s Daytona Prototype racecar.
When the car goes on sale next year, it will be one of the most expensive American cars ever built. However, it will be that 700+ horsepower that gets people talking, especially due to the extremely low curb weight this car will feature.
Tesla P90D
When Tesla announced the Insane Mode in the P85D, the world took notice. A electric family sedan that was able to stomp supercars left and right. If the Hellcat was the middle finger to the Prius and environmentalists, the P85D was the middle finger to the Hellcat. Now however, Tesla has launched a new upgraded version of the car with a new, higher horsepower battery pack. The P90D now makes a staggering 762 horsepower and the Insane Mode has been changed to Ludicrous Mode. What’s next, Plaid?
Hennessey Venom GT
Last, but certainly not least, we have literally the fastest car ever produced and it just so happens to be American. The Hennessey Venom GT began life in the mind of John Hennessey, the man behind turbocharging Dodge Vipers and Corvettes.
He wanted something biblically fast, something to rival that of the Bugatti Veyron. What happened next is the stuff of legend. He took the 1,200-horsepower twin-turbocharged V8 out of a Corvette, re-engineered a Lotus Exige to accommodate the massive engine, re-engineered the aerodynamics, and then took the newly created Venom GT to the longest bit of road he could find.
The car has since been clocked at 270.9 miles per hour, beating the Bugatti at its own game. It exudes American exceptionalism.
You see, we haven’t lost our need for speed. It is still very much an American quality, and we highly doubt that the all out speed wars will ever die out. Even if the internal combustion engine goes away, companies like Tesla, as shown above, are still creating ludicrously fast cars.
