Video games have come a long way since the days of Pong and Pac-Man, where the images on-screen look sometimes more real than reality. So why is it that one of the most advanced racing simulators in the world is missing a key visual component to a handful of its cars?
The game has several great Chevy models spanning the decades, including a 1969 Camaro SS396 and a Monte Carlo SS. But when you actually go to select those cars in the game, there is no mention of “Super Sport” or any kind of “SS” logos on those iconic cars.
Bang Shift obtained a comment from Forza’s Community manager: “Changes to the Super Sport models In Forza 6 were made in association with Chevrolet in order to align with the brand’s global naming strategies.” The previous sentence amounts to classic corporate PR gibberish, and still does not explain why the censoring of SS.
Some in the gaming community have hypothesized that it is because the game is sold around the world, and that the “SS” letters have a historical stigma in Europe. But that seems a little far-fetched, and to paraphrase one forum member, “El Caminos and Camaros weren’t rounding up dissidents at 3:00 am.”
So why no SS? There is a model sold by Chevrolet called the SS or Super Sport. It is the first time a model is wearing just that name alone. There is the possibility General Motors asked to have the SS removed from all models so buyers are not confused between a ’70 Chevelle and a brand-new sedan called SS. The SS also goes by different names in different markets.
So would GM actually remove all mentions of SS in the game just so Australian buyers don’t confuse their Holden Commodore with an American-market SS? Making things even more confusing is the fact that some screen grabs show Chevy cars clearly with SS badging. So which is it? And if the SS is being removed, then why? We’ll let you know if we turn anything up.
