High-performance luxury SUVs are no one’s idea of practical or fuel-economy-friendly. Yet, luxury brands continue to make them, probably because they can get away with it. The newest one to ply American roads will be the Mercedes-Benz G65 AMG, coming Stateside for the 2016 model year.
Like the G63 AMG, which is already available here, the G65 AMG is based on the very old-school Geländewagen, but in this iteration its powered by a 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged V12 that makes 604 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque. All the power gets to the ground via all-wheel-drive and a seven-speed automatic transmission.
The G65 AMG has been on sale overseas since 2012, but that’s set to change. Land Rover’s new Range Rover Sport SVR will have competition, as will Porsche’s Cayenne Turbo S. Don’t forget that Bentley, Lamborghini, and Maserati are all working on high-end performance SUVs as well.
If you’re a one-percenter with a lot of money and questionable taste, the G65 AMG will likely cost more than $250,000 when it goes on sale as a 2016 model.
