Manufacturers start working on new technologies many years before we see them in production vehicles, and this patent from Ford points toward a new 11-speed transmission happening somewhere in their future. The official patent document was just published on April 9th by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office with details on the proposed transmission.

The document comes complete with schematics and a detailed description of the possible new transmission configurations. Unfortunately, there’s no inkling about which cars it could appear in or when that car might hit the road.

It shows three different possible variants of the 11-speed transmission with unique combinations of clutches, brakes, and gears. Ford has announced a 10-speed that will be in the 2017 F-150 Raptor, but there’s nothing official on an 11-speed other than this patent document.

According to AutoGuide, Ford powertrain spokesman Paul Seredynski wouldn’t confirm the 11-speed saying, “As a technology leader, we submit patents on innovative ideas as a normal course of business. Patent submissions help protect our new ideas but do not necessarily indicate future business or product plans.” Basically, they ain’t saying nothing about this new transmission.
