Herbie The Love Bug is Going Up For Auction

BOLD RIDE

Herbie

Herbie the Love Bug is the most well-known Volkswagen Beetle on the planet, and now it’s he’s going up for auction. The 1963 Beetle made his debut in The Love Bug back in 1968 and appeared in three more movies in the series, making his final appearance in 1980′s Herbie Goes Bananas.

There was more than one Herbie used in the films, but only a few still exist today. This one is #5916. He’s also known as the ‘oil squirter’ as he was designed to squirt oil out of his wheel well which he does onto an officer’s foot in 1977′s Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo.

Some Herbies couldn’t be driven, but this one was used for both interior and driving shots so you can take him out on the road. He was sold to a private collector after his last film appearance and eventually made his was to Arthur Porter. He had the car restored to its Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo guise and drove it in vintage car races until 2000.
Herbie then headed to museums before being purchased by Doug Kaufmann who restored the interior to match the Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo exterior and re-installed vintage bumpers that were removed when the car was being raced by Porter. Herbie has an 1835cc engine with dual Kadron Solex carburetors and can be yours when he goes up for auction through Barrett-Jackson at Palm Beach this month.
