The words cheap and McLaren don’t typically go hand in hand. After all, this is the same company responsible for the insanely fast and insanely expensive P1 hypercar ($1.15 million). But for the marque’s latest offering, they’ve gone the thriftier route.

The new 540C — essentially a detuned 570S — comes with a price tag of only £126,000 (about $188,000) in comparison to the 570S’ £145,000 (about $216,000) price tag. Affordable, no?

What you get for that 188 large is a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 good for 533 horsepower and a 0-62 mph time of 3.5 seconds. That means the 540C not only undercuts the 570S in price, but also power (562 horsepower).

What the 540C does offer, though, is improved city driving. With a more day-to-day friendly approach, the 540 gets some retuned dampers and an overall more livable driving style in comparison to its sportier siblings. For those of you who enjoy driving home fast from the market, but not breaking your eggs in the process.

The McLaren 540C will show off at the Shanghai Auto Show before it goes on sale worldwide. No word on US price just yet.
