Here’s Your Chance to Own This Fantastic 1958 Buick Nailhead V8 Dragster

Buick’s 322-cubic inch V8 was nicknamed the Nailhead for its valve placement, and quickly became a big hit with drag racers back in the 1950s. Ford’s flathead V8 had already been customized about as much as possible, so the Buick Nailhead gave racers a welcome chance to upgrade and modify a new engine. This particular example was built roughly six years ago by collector Mike Guffey. He based it on a square-tube chassis found near Chicago that is believed to be from 1958. Bodywork was kept to a minimum to keep things lightweight. They also strove to make it period-correct with features like aircraft-style racing harnesses to keep the driver in his seat.
The rear wheels have M&H Racemaster drag slicks and the front wheels get a little accent from aluminum wheel covers. Inner covers get an engine-turned finish while outer covers get brushed aluminum. The engine is a Buick Nailhead V8 that gets period-appropriate Hillborn fuel injection, Offenhauser valve covers, and tubular exhaust headers.
It’s mated to an “in-and-out” transmission. The car has been in the possession of Andrews since 2009 so it has the Andrews’ Flying A Garage motif that is seen throughout their collection. “Little Nailhead” will be going up for auction through RM Auctions on May 2nd with an expected price between $25,000 and $40,000.
