BOLD RIDE
The digital world is a strange place, full of strange things that don’t exist in the real world and may never break the coded bond of 0′s and 1′s. The latest design from Volkswagen is one such thing, but with 503 horsepower on tap and stunning supercar looks, we can think of a few reasons why it should.
In the real world, the 2015 Golf GTI looks as stylish as it ever has. In the digital world, that would be quite the understatement. The GTI Supersport evolves the current Golf’s design, adding a massive rear wing, aggressive aerodynamic creases, 20-inch alloy wheels, and a road-hugging ground effects package. You wouldn’t say it looks like a spaceship in appearance, compared to some of the series’ more futuristic designs, but the GTI Supersport may very well rocket off the line like a space craft.
That’s because under the hood is a familiar sight for Volkswagen fans – a VR6 engine. In digital tune, Volkswagen alleges the VR6 pumps out 503 horsepower and 490 lb-ft of torque, sent to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system. Judging by the video of the GTI Supersport getting quite sideways, below, it seems that power is put to good use.
Understandably, you want one… and if the grapevine rumors are true, you may very well be able to get the next best thing. Last November, Volkswagen unveiled the scintillating Golf R 400 concept at the Beijing auto show. It packed 395 horsepower, 4Motion all-wheel-drive, a 3.9 second sprint to 60 mph, and stunning looks. Claims have persisted that it will reach production, and a VW executive is alleged to have confirmed the model, but no official announcement has been made.
Until then, perhaps the 503 horsepower GTI Supersport can keep your thumbs entertained on Gran Turismo.
