How One Artist Turned an Old Camaro Into a 3D Sculpture

Art cars have been a pretty regular thing in the industry since the inception of the car itself. BMW made it famous, and others have copied, but one artist completely turned the tables with his latest creation. If you were at the New York Auto Show this past week, you couldn’t have missed it.

 

It’s based off an old Camaro, and while it may not bear much of a resemblance to the factory model, this one-of-a-kind piece of art truly is unique. It was created by artist Ioan Florea, and it’s as intricately crafted as it is eye-catching. We caught up Ioan to learn a little bit more:

“The idea was to take a functional, recognizable, ready-made, in this case, the Camaro, and turn into a object of art. The entire surface is encapsulated in 3D printed full color seamless texture.”

Using two 3D printers working around the clock, Ioan was able to create the unique texture you see in the images over nearly every inch of the car. And when I say nearly every inch, I mean nearly every inch.

“The shock of this project is that the entire Camaro is covered with the 3D pigment including all the windows. Camaro has the roof and the back windshield made out of glass. Everything is covered creating a entire new concept turning the functional car into a sculpture on wheels.”

And that he did. But what has the general consensus on his latest project been?

“So far people are saying that the car came from the bottom of the ocean, and is covered with coral. Interesting; it actually came from the bottom of computer imagery.”

Alongside his latest Camaro project, Ioan also has his liquid metal Ford Torino on display, which was unveiled in 2013. Hopefully we’ll see many more unique projects from Ioan in the near future.
