1,000 MPH Bloodhound SSC to Make Its Public Debut

BOLD RIDE

The Bloodhound SSC has announced its public coming out party: Nov. 17. The big event takes place at the Newquay Aerohub, Cornwall in England.

But there’s just one catch. For its first public showing, the Bloodhound SSC (Super Sonic Car) is only striving to hit the rather pedestrian 200 mph—not the 1,000 mph it seeks to reach in 2016.

Bloodhound is the British project to build the world’s fastest car. By achieving quadruple figures, organizers hope to smash the current record of 763 mph set by Thrust SSC, a UK team led by Richard Noble and driven by Andy Green: both of whom are involved in the Bloodhound project.

As we previously reported, the Bloodhound has three power plants: a Rolls-Royce EJ200 jet from a Eurofighter Typhoon, a cluster of Nammo hybrid rockets and a 650-horsepower engine that drives the rocket oxidizer pump. Among them they generate 135,000 thrust horsepower, equivalent to 180 F1 cars.

Organizers (probably seeking some great tax deductions) have turned the Bloodhound into a massive STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) learning program for about 100,000 British tykes. They’re going to learn about things like the aluminum disc wheels that spin at over 170 revolutions per second. Calculations indicate that at peak speed, the wheels will be generating 50,000 radial g at their rim.

More information about the November event is available at the Bloodhound website. You’ll need to be a donor to receive an invite.
