New Fiat 124 Abarth Spider Could Be Pretty Quick

BOLD RIDE

Fiat 124 Concept

Your move, Germany. While Fiat continues to put its Mazda Miata-based 124 roadster through the ringer, new reports suggest that this hot little Italian could be about as quick as a Porsche Boxster. Mamma mia!

In a recent report from Autoblog, new spy shots suggest that the upcoming 124 will feature the same 4-cylinder engine from the current Alfa Romeo 4C. While it will be detuned from 237 horsepower to sit somewhere closer to 200 horsepower, that’s still about 50 more than the Mazda Miata on which it’s based. Not to mention it would get to 60 mph in just under five seconds.

Initial reports and spy shots suggested that the base 124 would actually use a 1.4-liter turbo from a Fiat 500 Abarth and feature dual exhaust. The latest prototype spotting features quad exhaust, and and engine that “sounded more aggressive.” It leads us to believe that the 124 will come in a variety of options (including Abarth spec).

As we already know, Mazda won’t be giving its new MX-5 any more power—which is good news for Fiat. Now it looks like those high-powered 124 reports could come to fruition if the latest set of rumors are any indication.

We should know more about Fiat’s hotted-up little roadster towards the end of the year.
