Koenigsegg Wants to Build More “Normal” Cars

When you’re in the business of building 1,500-horsepower Swedish hypercars, it might sound a little ridiculous to go from that into building affordable hatchbacks. But don’t call Christian Von Koenigsegg ridiculous—the same man who founded the hypercar firm now wants to build more affordable cars for us common folk.

Sitting down with the guys at Car Throttle, Koenigsegg spoke openly about the idea of creating something more mass market. That more “normal” vehicle could be derived from the hybrid technology currently found in his stunning hypercars.

“Within our company there could be room to start utilizing all the technological developments we have created,” he said, “And trickle them down into more normal cars.”
The move into more mainstream vehicles would be a new direction for the company. Though, don’t expect to see the Koenigsegg name on any hot hatchbacks or hybrid sedans. A sub-brand that falls under the main brand would be a more likely possibility.

“I think the brand Koenigsegg should stay in this rarified area and make these extreme machines and keep pushing the limit.”
Right now, Von Koenigsegg is open to the idea of working with manufacturers on producing this more affordable vehicle, but the idea is still in its infancy. So don’t expect to see a Toyota Yaris with a Koenigsegg drivetrain on the market anytime soon.
