Mercedes-AMG has confirmed that a race car based on its new GT sports car will be launched in 2016 as a successor to the current SLS AMG GT3. The new race car will be known simply as the GT3 and will start testing sometime next year. We can also expect a road-going version of the new race car at some point, but it will feature a unique name since Mercedes-AMG isn’t keen to call at a GT3 as well.
In the meantime, the SLS AMG GT3 will soldier on for one more year of motorsport. It’s been extremely successful for Mercedes-AMG, with 2014 seeing 40 teams signing up to use the car. Naturally, the support service for the SLS AMG GT3 will continue after the launch of new GT3 in 2016, including the supply of spare parts.
Mercedes-AMG is also spicing things up by launching its own one-make racing series, which for its inaugural season will be based around the SLS AMG GT3. The new series will be called the AMG Customer Sports Championship and its inaugural season will run from December 1, 2014 through to November 30, 2015.
There will be titles for Pro Driver, Driver and Team, and at the end of the season the competitors with the most points can win some prizes from Mercedes-AMG and sponsors IWC Schaffhausen and Rotwild.
