Like celebrities and insecure high school students, automakers pay close attention to social media.

Mercedes-Benz recently reached a milestone 17 million fans on Facebook, and it decided to say thanks with, what, else, an art installation of its brand new AMG GT sports car made entirely of... tape.

That household item creates a surprisingly vivid image of the twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8-powered AMG GT, and you can watch it appear on a blank wall in the AMG Private Lounge in Affalterbach, Germany, thanks to the magic of time lapse.

It's the perfect temporary workday distraction to share with your friends on, well, Facebook. So maybe Mercedes can look forward to more fans, and producing more potentially-viral videos in an endless cycle of social media promotion.

While Mercedes is celebrating on its Facebook achievement (as well as its 2014 Formula One success), Ferrari has 16.5 million fans and counting. That means the Italian sports car manufacturer could take the lead in the race for Facebook fans soon. We'll have to wait and see.
