The Hemmings Motor News Great Race is sold out, but there’s still a chance to take part in the experience. The Great American Tour will run alongside the Great Race to offer a chance to participate in the drive without the pressure of the timed competition. According to Hemmings, it’s a more relaxed way to take part in this year’s east-to-west tour and is perfectly suited to those who are inexperienced and simply want to make the journey. This is only the second year of the Great American Tour and four of last year’s teams liked it enough to sign up again for this year.
The event will run from June 15-20 starting out in San Rafael, California with plans to leave that night. Things will kick off with a theatrical screening of the 1965 film The Great Race. Once the drive begins, there are tours all along the way including Bodega Bay, the Golden Gate Bridge and Sonomoa Raceway.
There will also be an adventure in Napa on Friday before everyone gets the chance to participate in the opening festivities for the Great Race on Saturday, June 18. The Great American Tour will then move out and conclude in Reno, Nevada. A maximum of 25 teams are permitted with vehicles allowed only from 1979 or earlier.
