For decades, American car companies have been more concerned with quarter-miles than they have Nürburging lap times. But as cars like the Camaro and Mustang evolve, so do their racing DNA. And here and now in 2015, the Nürburgring is pretty important to automakers.
Case in point— a new report is telling us that the Mustang Shelby GT350R lapped the Nürburgring faster than the new track-proven Camaro Z/28. And that’s a pretty big deal for the Blue Oval.
At 7:32.2, the unconfirmed lap time bests the Camaro Z/28 by a whole five seconds (7:37.4). That’s with both of these cars pushing out 500 horsepower and both of them stripped down to as light as they can be.
Ford hasn’t said anything official about the lap time just yet, but if it is true, no doubt Ford engineers will be waving around that trophy for as long at they can. Or at least until Chevy debuts a newer, lighter, faster Z/28.
