BOLD RIDE
National signing day was this week, and, yes, Snoop Dogg’s son Cordell Broadus announced he’s going to play alongside Diddy’s son at UCLA. To talk about the recruits, the recruitment process, and the Super Bowl, all-time great Michael Irvin hit up the Dan Patrick Show for a quick interview.
Near the end, Patrick asked Irvin a question that could apply to just about every single sought-after high school athlete: “No names here, best offer you ever got from a school was what?” Irvin’s straight answer: “A Camaro.”
Irvin had scholarship offers from all over the country; Syracuse, Indiana, Michigan State, LSU, and, of course, Miami were some of the top choices. One of these school not named LSU was guilty of trying to bribe Irvin.
“One recruiter was driving me home in a Camaro, and and he goes, ‘Man, this is a nice car,’” Irvin said. “I hadn’t been in a car like this. And [the recruiter] says, ‘It’s yours. All we gotta do is sign.’ I said, ‘What?’”
Irvin began playing for the University of Miami, where he accumulated 2,427 yards from scrimmage and 26 receiving touchdowns, in 1985. If the car were brand new, that probably means he was riding around in a 1986 model. If the school did it right, it might have been an IROC-Z, as well.
