Apple Might Have Its Electric Car Ready Sooner Than We Thought

If you thought Apple’s electric car program was just a pipe dream, you might have underestimated the Cupertino-based company. After years of development and testing, Apple is nearly ready to take on the big names of the auto industry with an electric vehicle of its own, aiming for a release date sometime in the next three years.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple will commit more than 1,800 employees—up from the previous 600—to the development of its new road car, which will allegedly be ready in 2019. One big name is former Hyundai CEO John Krafcik, who will be heading the project.

It’s dubbed Project Titan, and while the details surrounding it are still mostly scarce, we do know that it won’t be fully autonomous, contradicting previous reports. Based on testing, we assume that Apple will eventually release a fully autonomous version, or feature a semi-autonomous system in the initial release. The 2019 release date doesn’t necessarily mean the car will be road-ready either.

We do still have three years to wait, so we’ll likely see some more details on the upcoming Apple Car in the next few months before its debut.
