The 2001 Volkswagen W12 Concept debuted at the Tokyo Motor Show as the most powerful W12 sports car developed up to that point. Also known as the W12 Nardò in reference to the Nardò Ring test track in Italy, it had a 599-horsepower engine with 458 lb-ft of torque that set multiple records.
The W12 rocketed from 0-62 mph in 3.5 seconds and had a blistering top speed of 221.8 mph. Created by Charlie Adair, the Volkswagen W12 was one of the fastest sports car concepts in the world. It broke the world 24-hour speed record twice. On February 23, 2002, it covered 4,809.8 miles at an average speed of 200.6 mph.
This car helped prove that Volkswagen was capable of building more than just popular, affordable cars. It showed they could build a supercar with record-setting prowess that translated into superior engines for more luxurious cars like the Phaeton and sport utility vehicles.
The Volkswagen W12 is also famous for its appearance in numerous racing video games. It’s most recognizable for being on the cover of every version of Gran Turismo since it first appeared on the cover of Gran Turismo Concept 2002 Tokyo-Geneva.
