BOLD RIDE

All good things must come to an end — and get better. That’s the thought that comes to mind with the announcement the Lotus Exige S now comes with an automatic transmission and paddle shifters.

Sure, purists will moan about the idea but let’s face it. There are certain things that machines just do better than 99.9 percent of all drivers, and shifting is one of them.

Lotus says the gearshift speed is 240 milliseconds. That helps it achieve a 0-60 time of 3.8 seconds— faster than the manual Exige S being driven by a professional Lotus driver.

Don’t kid yourself. You’re not going to beat those times no matter how good you are at Project Gotham racing.

The Exige S automatic is described as Lotus’ fastest production car ever. The company says the 345-horsepower, 3.5-liter, supercharged V6 engine Lotus Exige S with the six-speed automatic is as fast around the Lotus Hethel test track as the manual Exige S. It can also hit 100 mph in 9 seconds and produces 295 lb. ft. of torque.

Company execs expect one third of its global sales will be for the Exige S automatic. Once owners experience it we suspect that number will be much higher.
