Bet you didn’t think you’d be seeing a Boomerang up for auction anytime soon. It was in 1971 that the original Maserati Boomerang made its debut; then showing up again a year later in Geneva with an actual V8 engine and drivetrain.
With its iconic wedge-shape, it created a signature style for designer Georgette Giugiaro for years to come. For Maserati, it signified a dramatic shift in styling from then on. It helped spawn cars like the Bora and De Tomaso Pantera with its streamlined design. It was such a hit, in fact, that the Italian automaker displayed it in Turin, Paris, London, Geneva, and eventually Barcelona.
After the 1972 Barcelona show, Maserati sold it off to a private collector. After that, it changed hands three more times, all to collectors ensuring the originality, road legality, and safety of such an iconic vehicle. Now, for the first time, it’s coming up for public auction.
The Bonhams auction will be held this Saturday, September 5th, 2014 in Chantilly, France. Considering it is the only example in existence, it could go for millions. And we can only assume Maserati will be on hand to make a run at it as well.
