Rolls-Royce Issues a Recall…For a Single Car

Between Takata’s airbag recall and the massive Volkswagen’s diesel scandal, it may seem like cars owners are getting “recall fatigue.” And why not? In the last two years, the recalls have occurred on an unprecedented size and scale, and it appears that it is only getting worse. A recall would have to be really unique in order to stand out.

 

Rolls-Royce has issued a recall that will get your attention, and not for how many cars it is recalling, but for how few. The BMW-owned British automaker is recalling a one car. We don’t mean one model line, or one model year. We mean one single car.

According to the UK’s Telegraph, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a recall for a single 2015 Rolls-Royce Ghost made on January 23, 2014. The uber-luxury car is being recalled for an issue with its airbags.

Per the NHTSA release: “The affected vehicle has thorax air bags fitted to both front seats that may fail to meet the side impact performance requirements for the front seat occupants. As such, this vehicle may fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 214, ‘Side Impact Protection’.”

A Rolls-Royce dealer will bring in the Ghost for and replace both the driver’s side and passenger side thorax airbags, with no charge to the consumer. According to the Financial Times, that particular car had left the factory in January of 2014, but the owner has not yet taken delivery.

With a starting price of £231,730 ($483,000) and a renowned service system, we’re sure the dealer will make that fix before the presumably well-heeled owner gets behind the wheel for the first time.
