Unwavering design, racing prowess, and sheer exclusivity are three factors that sell top dollar vintage Porsches. In the case of this gorgeous 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 RSR… provenance played a big part as well.
That’s because this rarified 911 belonged to Mexican Formula 1 driver Hector Rebaque, which explains why it rang home a towering final bid of $1,237,500 last weekend at Gooding & Company’s Amelia Island auction. It didn’t top the sales charts – that honor goes to a ’67 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 at $3.3 million – but it did set a world record for Carrera 3.0 RSR’s, impressive nonetheless.
Widely regarded as one of the last true privateer racers of Formula 1, Hector Rebaque made the jump to Formula 1 in 1977. Despite a rather tumultuous career spanning 58 grand prix, Rebaque scored 13 championship points and raced under his own colors – Team Rebaque – during the 1978 and ’79 championships. The 911 obviously wasn’t part of that series.
Rather, Rebaque acquired the Porsche 3.0 RSR in 1974 at the age of 18, and, with major sponsorship from Café Mexicano, he took the checkered flag on his first outing – the IMSA 1000 Km of Mexico City. He later campaigned the 24 Hours of Daytona four times in the 911, as well as the 12 Hours of Sebring twice, receiving class leading finishes on a number of occasions.
Rebaque’s 911 once again dons his original Café Mexicano livery, and is said to be a quite unusually correct example, in comparison to many of the classic race-prepped RSRs. The 911 RSR factory-racer made its debut in 1973, but it was the 1974 model that added Porsche’s larger 3.0-liter flat-six to the mix. As a result, Porsche privateers dominated GT categories the world over.
