The 2016 Chevy Camaro Will Shed ‘More Than 200 Pounds’

At 3,900 pounds, the Chevy Camaro is one of the heaviest cars in its segment. It seems to be a staple of the muscle car. But thanks to official word from GM earlier today, the 2016 Chevy Camaro will get a pretty dramatic weight loss.

Shedding 200 pounds from its predecessor, the 2016 Camaro will be lighter thanks to its all-new Alpha platform. That’s the same platform that underpins the current Cadillac ATS and signifies a 21 percent drop in weight over the previous suspension setup.

An early educated guess would suggest that the new Camaro sits somewhere near 3,500 pounds, putting it in the same weight class as the 3,526-pound Ford Mustang. And that’s a good thing, meaning both will be nearly identical in terms of power and performance, making the rivalry between the two even that much stronger.

We won’t know anything for sure until May, though, when the car makes its official debut at Belle Isle Park in Detroit.
