If you don’t drive a crossover, chances are someone in your family does… or would like to. CUV popularity has absolutely exploded in recent years, sending models like the Honda CR-V to the tops of the sales chart. Even though the crossover has yet to eclipse America’s sales heavyweight champion, the Ford F-150, the CUV segment as a whole is becoming an equally massive entity.
Perhaps even more interesting are some of the segment’s new pint-sized offerings that are coming into form for 2015. With swaths of crossover options abounding, some two-to-three deep in model lineups, which one do you think is the coolest? We give some of our nominations below.
The overall sales leaders give a hint as to what mainstream America finds cool… the Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, and Toyota RAV4, which equated to a combined total of 908,929 vehicles in 2014. Quite a lot, though you wouldn’t exactly say they have an abundance of ‘zest’.
For that zing, the compact crossover market is the place to visit. Spicy performers like the Nissan Juke (especially the Nismo RS) and Mini Countryman have effectively carved out the ‘small sporty CUV’ niche – a segment that the incoming class of 2015 will be happy to fill.
2015 sees the debut of the hotly anticipated Jeep Renegade, Honda HR-V, Fiat 500X, and Mazda CX-3. At the top end, there’s also the manic 355 horsepower and all-wheel-drive toting Mercedes GLA45 AMG, as well as the BMW X1 and Audi Q3. If the decision between hot hatch and SUV has ever plagued your mind, one of these newcomers can surely remedy.
