Goodbye CC, hello Sport Coupé Concept GTE. OK, so this isn’t the final car that’s going to replace the CC, but it’s the concept that will lead to the car that will eventually take its place. What you’re looking at is also the vehicle Volkswagen claims marks the beginning of a new design era for the German automaker.
The SCC GTE combines aspects of numerous vehicle segments into one. It has a low-slung greenhouse to give it a coupe-like feel, yet it has four doors like a sedan, and a hatchback in the rear.
The concept also shows off a front and rear that are sharper than any current VW. The vents are more angular, the headlights bleed into a larger and more bold grille, the door panels are more sculpted, and the rear is less bulbous.
The GTE in the name indicates that the SSC has a hybrid powertrain. A 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine is paired with two electric motors that use a lithium-ion battery. The front electric motor puts out 54 horsepower, the rear motor puts out 114 horsepower, and the total package produces 374.
Using a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission, the four-wheel-drive SSC GTE can attain a combined 118 mpg. If switched to solely electric mode, you’ll be able to drive 32 miles, and when the car is using just the gas engine, it switches to front-wheel drive only.
The overall design stylistically certainly seems to be an upgrade compared to the current offerings from Volkswagen. But this is also still the concept, and the production model will definitely be more tame. Considering this design already looks more evolutionary than revolutionary, there’s reason to wonder if the new car will actually look that much different.
