Watch as a Modest Volkswagen Beetle Spanks a Porsche 911

You’ve heard us extol the virtues of building a sleeper in the past. Building a car that flies under the radar both figuratively and literally is not only awesome, but also practical. A car doesn’t have to look like much when it goes like stink. That reasoning definitely had a hand in the latest Mighty Car Mods video.

Take the 1974 Volkswagen Beetle. One of the slowest cars ever built. It’s quarter mile time, when new, took an agonizing 22-seconds. However, Marty and Moog love the little Beetle, just not its performance. Therefore, they set about boosting the Beetle’s output with the help of a Subaru Forester engine.

The EJ25 is a variant of the WRX STI motor and can put down serious numbers. The 2.5-liter turbocharged mill though didn’t remain stock and received new forged pistons, a forged crank, and forged rods. They then bored and honed the block, all of which was done so they could run a massive amount of boost without fear of the motor blowing up in their faces.

With all of the mods complete, the pair took their new Beetle to the drag strip to set a couple passes, and along the way met up with another German super coupe, a 911 Carrera. The Porsche is a 996 iteration, so it’s a few years old, but that should still be enough to fight off an old Volkswagen Beetle. To make a long story short, it isn’t.

Now watch as the Mighty Car Mods Beetle, with its 359 horsepower, outruns a Porsche 911 like it was standing still.
