For the past two years, Callaway Competition—the racing wing of Callaway Cars—has been hard at work nipping, tucking, and transforming the C7 Corvette from tame sports car into unhinged racer.

This is what they came up with, and on looks alone it’s hard not to see a checkered flag in its future.

Meet the 2016 Callaway Corvette GT3-R. The heady Callaway has been designed to meet current FIA GT3 regulations, and according to the company, the cars will campaign a variety of racing series worldwide beginning in 2016.

Details are scant, but a quick look at this car’s exterior will show that the rowdy Callaway has come a long way from its C7 roots.

Carbon fiber pushes the Corvette’s flanks wide and over the top of racing rubber, aero slats dive into the C7’s sinewy wheel arches, and a giant wing parks itself out back. Inside, you’ll find no creature comforts, just some scaffolding and more carbon fiber…then again, it is a race car.

Under the hood, Callaway reveals the GT3-R receives power from a “Chevrolet-based” 6.2-liter V8, which shovels out 600 horsepower and puts it to the ground via an X-Trac six-speed paddle shift sequential gearbox.

After putting the car through its paces on track, the development team says it surpasses its expected performance.

“We wanted to set another milestone in our company’s history with our new design, developing and constructing a future-proof vehicle that will be produced from 2016 and used for many years to come,” said Ernst Wöhr and Giovanni Ciccone, managing partners of Callaway Competition.

It is not said whether the Corvette GT3-R will ever arrive stateside (we already have GM’s in-house Corvette C7.R), but you never know.
