Haase, who is just 18 years old and literally graduated as Carlisle High School valedictorian the day after this race, was competing in the 305 class at Knoxville Raceway. The half-mile oval track is the self-proclaimed sprint car capital of the world and has been hosting races since 1901. Until now, all winners have been men.
This is the Iowa native’s rookie season racing in the Lucas Oil Championship Cup Series. Before this past weekend’s race, she’d come close to victory before, placing as runner-up. After batting for command of second earlier in this race, she finally snuck past fellow rookie Chase Wanner into first on the inside line during lap six of the 15-lap race. She held on for the checkered flag and forever stamped her name in the books. Watch the highlights of the race above.
Her goal of eventually racing and winning in the World of Outlaws sprint series certainly looks within reach.
