Mercedes CLK GTR Roadster With Just 4 Miles Headed to Auction

Back in the late 1990’s, Mercedes absolutely dominated sports car racing. Whether it was through DTM, or through the testament that is Le Mans, the three-pointed star was practically unstoppable. Much of that success was down to one car and one car alone, the Mercedes CLK GTR.

The CLK GTR was designed to take the fight to McLaren and their F1 GTR’s, and dominate in GT1 spec in both Le Mans and FIA racing trims. Out of the 22 races it competed it, the CLK GTR won 17, took pole 17 times, and won two Team and Drivers Championships. It was a brutal car, and was nigh unbeatable.

 

 

However, that’s not the best part of this car’s story. Even though its racing pedigree is prodigious, the CLK GTR is primarily known for the road going version Mercedes had to homologate. Using a variation of the race bred 6.9-liter V12 engine, Mercedes built a grand total of 26 road going cars. 20 of which were coupes, and 6 of which were roadsters. And right now, you have the chance to purchase one of those rare roadsters.

Coming up for auction at next month’s Bonhams sale at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, this 1999 Mercedes CLK GTR roadster could be yours for an estimated $2.2-$2.8 million dollars— which is a heck of a steal for a car that’s essentially a road going racecar that only has 4 miles (!) on the odometer. Plus, you get a version of the Pagani Zonda’s glorious sounding V12 engine. How could you go wrong with that? Just to give you an idea of how it sounds…
