Do you remember those cool optical illusion books that were all the rage when you were a child? Those ones that caused you to pass out from straining yourself? If you don’t, I feel really old. If you do, then you’re going to love this “art car” that Aston Martin built.
For this year’s 24hr of Le Mans, Aston Martin created a unique livery that will make it sublimely easy to pick out of the pack. According to Aston Martin, this rather interesting Vantage GTE livery was created by artist Tobias Rehberger and gives the illusion of movement and speed, even when standing still. The pattern supposedly imitates many takes on normal automakers camouflage designs that we see on prototype cars. Except, with this design, it complements the cars lines rather than hide them.
According to Rehberger, “My design for the Aston Martin art car is rooted in my interest in distorted perception and related phenomena like auto moving patterns, optical effects, camouflage and visual confusion, which I have addressed in many works before.” And we’d definitely agree— his attempt at a distorting perception worked wonderfully here.
You’ll be able to see the #97 Aston Martin Vantage GTE racing at Le Man in just a few short days, and suffice it to say, we’re eager to see how it does. Will it strike fear in the hearts of its competition, or will it just make them dizzy? Only time will tell.
