The formula to the perfect sports car is simple: rear-wheel drive, manual gearbox, Honda badge. But since the market dropped, we haven’t seen a sporty Honda in the lineup following the death of the the much-loved S2000 in 2009.

But fear not, Honda fans, some new patent renderings have just popped up online that give us hope of an affordable, fun Honda sports car yet. The images were registered on May 27th and released by the US Patent Office, and preview what may very well be a reborn S2000 (or something similar).

At first glance, you might think it’s just the new NSX. But if you have a keen eye, you’ll notice that the front end is slightly revised, the entire car looks smaller, and the rear end is redesigned entirely. So it all sounds like good news.

But here’s the not so good news: Honda has already confirmed that the NSX will be getting a few different variants. Likely a Type-R or even an all-electric version could be in the works. This patent could preview one of those.

Still, there’s a lot of variation between the patent you see here and the standard NSX, leading us to believe that Honda has something special up its sleeve. S2000 or not, I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
