Two American icons go into the ring, but only one can emerge victorious. The Shelby Mustang GT350 and the Dodge Challenger Hellcat are two of the most talked about cars in recent history. And for good reason.

The Charger Hellcat puts down 707 horsepower from a supercharged 6.2-liter V8, obviously.  The Shelby, on the other hand, was built for cornering, only producing 526 horsepower from a 5.2-liter V8. But even numbers can’t always predict what might happen in a quarter mile, especially here.

The two cars here are driven stock—straight from the factory floor. Both have a manual gearbox, and both are wearing some pretty bright colors, which we all know tacks on five more horsepower. But the results of this all-American drag race, filmed by the guys at Bay Area Racing, might surprise you.

No, the Shelby Mustang didn’t beat the Challenger Hellcat, but that was sort of expected. The surprising thing was that even with a 181 horsepower difference, the Shelby held its own for the length of the strip, even occasionally pushing past the Challenger.

One might attribute weight or a possible short shifting by the driver of the Hellcat to the close race, but we can’t discount how much of a mean vehicle the Mustang Shelby GT350 is. Even in straight lines.
