The 2017 Mazda Miata RF Hardtop is Pretty Much Perfect in Every Way

Take everything you knew about the Mazda Miata, and throw it out the window. Ok, maybe not everything—actually, just one thing: the soft convertible top. Mazda just unveiled the Miata RF in New York, and it’s the Mazda coupe you never knew you wanted until now.

 

From front to back, the car is stunning to look at. Unlike previous generations of hardtop Miata, this one seamlessly molds the foldable roof into a much more appealing package. We can only assume spent plenty of hours making sure it looked as appealing as possible, and not like some frumpy Easter egg.

In order to pop the top on this handsome new Mazda, simply push a button, and the rear end lifts up and swallows the window and roof panel. The result is a shape that looks more like a 911 Targa than it does a true hardtop convertible. Not that there’s anything wrong with that—quite the opposite, in fact.

 

Other than the advanced new roof system, most of the mechanics on this Miata will remain the same. U.S. buyers will have a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder Skyactiv engine available under the hood, while the rest of the world will choose between a 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter. The choice between automatic or manual remains, of course.

Mazda hasn’t said how much weight, if any, the new hardtop roof will add to the standard convertible, nor given us any indication as to price. We could care less at this point, we’re just going to bask in the beauty of this handsome new Mazda.
